Town Council grants fare increase to Killarney Jarveys

Jarveys in Killarney have been granted a fare increase by The Town Council. All of the different trips by hackney carriages and jaunting cars are to rise in price , some by as much as 50 per cent. Under Killarney`s town bye laws it’s up to the Cllrs to set the fares for jarvey car journeys. The last time this was done was back in 2001. This year the jarveys applied for an increase giving a list of reasons, including a rise in inflation, an increase in insurance and an increase in day to day running and maintenance chargesThey asked that all of their trips be set at higher prices and this was agreed to unanimously by Cllrs. The Ross Castle trip will have the largest increase from 20 euro to 32 euro which is a hike of over 50 per cent. Jarveys themselves decided to delete the round trip to Aghadoe from the price list. Meanwhile divisions within the jarvey community seem to have been put aside at least for the moment and at their recent AGM Patrick O Sullivan was re-elected Chairperson of the Killarney Jarvey’s Association by a majority of 2 to 1.
