Taxi fares may drop in the county

Taxi rates in Kerry could fall in the coming months following suggestions from the commissioner for taxi regulation that some fares were too high. The National Union of Taxi Drivers applied last week to local authorities for permission for a 50 cent fuel surcharge on all fares. The Tralee Taxi Association says that fuel costs have increased by 40% since 2003, and that they sharp increase is having serious consequence for taxi drivers. However ger deering the incoming commissioner for taxi regulation has ruled out the surcharge. Mr Deering intends to conduct a review of rates and will set a single national charge. He says there will be a major overhaul of fare structures early next year and that fuel costs will be considered.
