Currow 2-11 Na Gaeil 2-13

Currow had the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and took full advantage of this by placing Seamus Scanlon on the edge of the square. This move paid dividends as he broke down the first ball and kicked it to the back of the Na Gaeil net. Currow’s Mike McCarthy pointed a free after Seamus was fouled close to goal. However, the Na Gaeil defence soon settled and Eoin O’Neill opened the scoring for them on six minutes and this was followed by a Dara Devine pointed free after a foul on Jamie Lowham. Stefan Okunbor raced through from midfield and pointed for the home side. Currow’s Mike McCarthy put two more frees over the bar but then Dara Devine pointed from play and minutes later was on hand to crash a breaking ball to the Currow net. Na Gaeil were now a point to the good with 15 minutes gone. Ian McCarthy and Dara Devine put them three ahead on twenty minutes. But the accurate Mike McCarthy scored the next four points on the trot for Currow, three of them from frees, to leave them one point ahead at the break. Na Gaeil: 1-06 Currow: 1-07.

Andrew Barry opened the 2nd half scoring with a well struck 45 for Na Gaeil followed by a good point from Kieran O’Donovan. Na Gaeil lost Ian McCarthy after he received a nose injury and he was replaced by Dan Goggin. But on 13 minutes a speculative lob into the square was fisted to the Na Gaeil net by a Currow player to put them two points clear. This resulted in an injury to Na Gaeil keeper Seán Duggan who had to leave the field as a result. He was replaced by Eamon O’Neill. Dara Devine pointed two frees to level the game after 22 minutes of the half. Mike McCarthy put Currow ahead on 27 minutes with a pointed free. Stefan Okunbor won the kickout and was fouled. Eoin O’Neill got on the end of the well worked free and crashed it to the roof of the Currow net from all of 30 yards. Dara Devine pointed again to put Na Gaeil four clear with normal time up. But with eight minutes of injury time added on Currow stormed back into the game and scored the next three points through Luke Fitzgerald, Mike McCarthy and Daniel O’Shea to draw level on 35 minutes. Thereafter the Na Gaeil players composed themselves and worked the ball into the Currow half. Dara Devine pointed a free and Kieran O’Donovan had the last say, scoring a fine point. Currow had one more attack but Na Gaeil cleared their lines to win by two points. A great team display by Na Gaeil, which has earned them two more valuable league points.
