St Vincent de Paul has apologised after a young man posted a picture of himself with a cheque from the society indicating he would spend it at the Listowel races.
The conference was contacted by a young man who needed funds for college and was afraid he would lose his place if he didn’t pay quickly.
A decision was made by the conference to issue a cheque to the man in what was a time sensitive matter, according to St Vincent de Paul Regional President for Cork and Kerry, Christy Lynch.
Normal policy would be to issue the cheque directly to the educational authority.
Mr Lynch says the young man and his family are very upset after the incident which also prompted anger locally.
He says it is the first time something like this has happened and apologised for the incident.
