St.Mary’s Crowned South Kerry Football Champions

St Mary’s are the 2017 Walsh’s Super Valu sponsored South Kerry Senior Football champions.

In the Final they overcame Dromid 0-13 to 1-9.

The opening score did not arrive until the 10th minute, a point for Mary’s by Adam Quirke. Thomas Curran equalised for Dromid 2 minutes later. Bryan Sheehan had Mary’s back in front midway through the half and Denis Daly doubled the advantage almost immediately. 10 minutes from half time Dromid’s Thomas Curran halved the deficit. Conor Quirke, booked earlier in the encounter, was then dismissed, Mary’s down to 14 after Quirke was the recipient of a black card followed by a red. Curran pointed once more to make it honours even 7 minutes from the short whistle. Mary’s, through Bryan Sheehan, were back in front at 4 points to 3 with 5 minutes left in the period. That proved to be the final score of the first 30 minutes.

In the opening minute of the second half Denis Daly doubled the Mary’s advantage and the same player put over again to make it a 3 point game. Dromid brought the gap down to 2 before they were awarded a penalty, with Niall O’Shea fouled in the 35th minute. The kick was taken and scored by Chris Farley to put his side ahead at 1-4 to 0-6. The lead didn’t last too long as Bryan Sheehan restored parity. Dromid went back in front by 1 on the 40 minute mark, then doubled the lead. However, Mary’s hit back with 2 points in a row, the second of which from Bryan Sheehan had the sides level with 9 minutes remaining. Within a minute Daniel Daly had Mary’s ahead at 0-10 to 1-6. Bryan Sheehan made it a two point game 5 minutes from the end and the same player put his team 3 clear 2 minutes from time. Niall O’Shea pulled one back heading into 3 minutes of added on time and less than 60 seconds later Dylan O’Donoghue made it a one point game. In the closing minute of added on time Sean Cournane doubled the Mary’s advantage at 0-13 to 1-8. Dromid were then awarded a free, which was put over to put the minimum between the sides again. However, the full time whistle blew upon the kickout and Mary’s had their 4th title in a row.
