A solicitor for a Kerry County Councillor found guilty of assaulting a man in Kenmare two years ago says he will absolutely not be resigning his seat.

23-year-old Jackie Healy-Rae, a son of Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, of Sandymount, Kilgarvan was convicted of assaulting Kieran James twice in Kenmare on December 28th 2017.

Jackie Healy-Rae’s brother, Kevin, who is 22, was also found guilty of the same offences, while their friend 34-year-old Malachy Scannell of Inchacoosh, Kilgarvan was convicted of assaulting Mr James and Cornelius O’Sullivan and criminal damage on the same date.

They will be sentenced next month at Kenmare District Court.

Jackie Healy-Rae was elected to Kerry County Council earlier this year.

His solicitor, Padraig O’Connell said Mr Healy-Rae was elected by the court of public opinion by their votes and will not be resigning.

All three men are planning to appeal their convictions.
