The health minister has insisted that government plans for universal health insurance will not result in uncontrollable costs to the state. James Reilly says strict cost controls will be introduced when universal coverage is introduced in the coming years. His comments follow newspaper reports of concerns among civil servants that the ‘Dutch model’ of health insurance supported by Fine Gael could cost the state an extra 5 billion euro a year.
