Slade Power Wins Darley July Cup

Horse 6 The Eddie Lynam-trained Slade Power confirmed himself to be the best sprinter in Europe at Newmarket today by winning the Group 1 Darley July Cup just a couple of weeks after winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. With stable companion Sole Power an absentee due to the soft ground, Slade Power was hammered into 7-4 favouritism and he quickened clear under Wayne Lordan for a length and a half success over Tropics. What a day it has been for Johnny Murtagh. Not only did the former top jockey have a double at Dundalk, but his daughter Caroline rode her second ever winner when guiding his Fix It to victory in the Marshes Shopping Centre Handicap at odds of 9-2. Earlier on the Dundalk card, 7-2 shot Calorie won the Dundalk Equine Clinic Maiden for Murtagh under Gary Carroll. Star Flat performer Simenon, who was second to Estimate in the 2013 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, proved his versatility by winning the Grade 3 Kevin McManus Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary today. Sent off the 10-11 favourite, Simenon jumped really well in the hands of Paul Townend and stayed on strongly to deny main market rival Darwin’s Fox by one and a quarter lengths. Trainer Willie Mullins has any amount of options for Simenon now, including reverting back to the Flat for the Goodwood Cup during Glorious Goodwood.
