Skellig Michael will not reopen this Saturday as previously planned.
The Office of Public Works has confirmed to Radio Kerry News that the proposed opening date of May 18th has been deferred.
The OPW says due to poor weather and sea conditions, safe visitor access to Skellig Michael is not currently feasible as necessary pre-season safety works cannot be completed on time.
It normally needs 2 to 3 weeks to check Skellig Michael for winter storm damage, clear away any debris, provision staff quarters and prepare all visitor areas.
However, pre-season access this year has been very problematic, resulting in a significant backlog of work to deal with.
It adds that a revised opening date will be announced as soon as possible.
