A senator will seek the support of Kerry County Council in his presidency bid.
Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell, who had previously called for President Higgins to announce his own intentions, hopes to receive support ahead of a potential presidential election in October.
Senator Craughwell, a former president of the Teachers Union of Ireland, says a person seeking nomination requires 20 signatures from Oireachtas members, however, the Dáil sits for the final time this week ahead of the summer break.
He remains confident he will get the nomination through the backing of local authorities and says Galway County Council has already tabled a motion backing him.
Senator Craughwell also intends seeking the support of Kerry County Council.
