Dairy farmers in the county are being told that they can improve their margin on milk by up to 15 cent per gallon if they have better grassland techniques. A survey of 20 farms in North Kerry by teagasc and Kerry agribusiness is helping to devise a system of best practice for milk production. The results are due to be released at a seminar tonight in Tralee. According to Ger Courtney of Teagasc the study was set up against the backdrop of profit per gallon falling. He says one of the easiest ways of combating this is to have a good grassland policy. Mr Carmody says the full results of the study which is an overall approach to reducing costs, including good grassland management will be outlined tonight.
