Scale of traffic warden service in several Kerry towns being considered

Several Kerry towns may not continue to have a year round traffic warden service due to financial constraints. Kerry County Council says it is considering scaling back the service in Caherciveen, Castleisland, Dingle, Kenmare and Killorglin. Cars in carpark The local authority says this service, which also includes a warden in Ballybunion for the summer months, will cost 367,000 euro this year. This is funded entirely by the council and given the current difficult financial constraints this service is not sustainable unless an alternative source of income and more efficient process is implemented. A number of traffic studies were carried out in the towns which found that 800,000 euro could be generated by introducing a parking fee of 50 cent per 30 minutes of parking. This didn’t receive sufficient support at the Transport SPC. However the council says this may have to be reconsidered. Among the other options open to the council is reducing the year round service limiting it to certain high peak seasons instead.
