Salmon Anglers criticise new restrictions

A spokesperson for Salmon Anglers in the county says the new restrictions imposed on anglers are unfair. The new restrictions come into effect today and will considerably curtail the fishing quota for anglers. Jerome Dowling Secretary of the salmon sea and trout anglers believes anglers are being made scapegoats for the drop in salmon stocks.Anglers will be asked not to keep any more than one salmon per day, down from the previous limit of three. Local fisheries boards will be policing the measures with penalties for infringements ranging from on-the-spot fines to a court summons. Mr. Dowling believes drift netting is the real cause for the drop in salmon stocks.
