Robert O’Brien denys the murder of his sister

A 27 year-old has today denied the murder of his sister near Tralee after they had attended a cousin’s wedding. Robert O’Brien has gone on trial on the murder charge and in relation to a second offence before a jury of seven men and two women at the Central Criminal Court in Ennis, Co. Clare.O’Brien, of Bay 3, the Halting Site, Dingle Road, Tralee and of St. John’s Park, Castleisland, is accused of the murder of his 32 year-old sister and mother of three young children, Elizabeth McCarthy, at The Quay, Blennerville on September 28, 2004. Prosecuting counsel Mr Diarmuid McGuinness told the hearing today before Mr Justice Paul Carney that the victim was last seen getting into the defendant’s vehicle outside the Earl of Desmond Hotel in the early hours of that morning following their cousin’s wedding.Her body was found the following morning, September 29th 2004, and the accused man did not attend her funeral, the Court heard.
