Dingle businessman Michael Kavanagh is the new owner of the Rice House in the town. Radio Kerry News understands that he’s reached a deal with Udaras na Gaeltachta for the historic building. The sale had been held up while the planning was revoked. Mr Kavanagh`s plans are not known. Two months ago, the house was listed as a protected structure. In September 2002, Udaras secured planning to build a craft centre and demolish single storey buildings at the back of the house. The Rice Alliance campaigned against the development of the site, arguing its historical significance should be recognised. Udaras agreed to withdraw the planning, but insisted the sale would go ahead.
