Kerry County Council is to compile a report on reclassifying the roads from Ballybunion to Listowel and Tralee.
Cllr Robert Beasley brought up the issue at the recent county council meeting, having raised the matter previously at a Listowel Municipal District meeting.
The classification of any public road can only be made by a ministerial order.
Kerry County Council says it has engaged with the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland about changing the R553 Ballybunion Listowel Road and the R551 Ballybunion Tralee Road from Regional to National Secondary roads.
The council has been advised that a detailed report with an assessment of the route and justification for reclassification would be required by the Minister for his consideration.
An assessment will now be carried out and presented to councillors in advance of submitting to the Minister.
Currently there are 94km of national primary roads and 330km of national secondary roads in Kerry.
The national secondary roads in Kerry account for over 12% of the entire secondary network nationally.
