Regional Response Unit and Garda crisis negotiatior stand down following five hour stand off with man near Killarney

Garda Station, Killarney   A crisis negotiator and an on scene commander as well as a unit from the Regional Response Unit attended the scene of a house in Muckross,  Killarney following a five hour stand off with a man brandishing a firearm over night. The operation ended without incident at 3 o’clock this morning and the man is currently being held at Killarney Garda station. The incident began when Gardaí from Kenmare were called to the house at approximately 10 o’clock last night, when they arrived a man produced a firearm, made threats to Gardaí and threatened another man nearby. The Regional Response Unit from Limerick as well as members of the District Detective Unit, and a crisis negotiator were then alerted and attended the scene. Gardaí cordoned off the area around the house. The incident was managed by an on scene commander and ended at approximately 3am. A 46 year old Irish man was arrested at the scene. In a follow up search, Gardaí recovered two fire arms. The man is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 as amended, at Killarney Garda Station. The scene is preserved for technical examination and the investigation is ongoing. The man can be held for an initial period of 24 hours and this can be extended for up to 72 hours.
