An Bord Pleanala has refused planning permission for the redevelopment of a south Kerry hotel.
The original application had sought to overhaul the Cable O’Leary’s site in Ballinskelligs.
On June 26th last, Kerry County Council granted planning permission, subject to conditions, to OS Properties to demolish the existing hotel and build a new 45 bedroom and three suite hotel including a bar, restaurant, gym, along with car and bus parking.
This decision was appealed by two parties to An Bord Pleanala.
The planning appeals board has decided to refuse permission for the proposed development due to its excessive height relative to the surrounding buildings.
It said the development’s bulk and mass, building line and design would be out of character with the pattern of development in the vicinity and would materially affect the character of Ballinskelligs.
The board said the demolition of the existing hotel has not been justified and added that the proposed development would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
