Prison Service says eligibility to engage with the parole board no guarantee of release

The Prison Service says being eligible to engage with the parole board is no guarantee that an inmate will be granted parole. Jail fence prison It follows a report in The Star newspaper over the weekend that Thomas Barrett of Causeway will be eligible for parole in two months. The 36 year old shot Michael and Denis Hanrahan dead in their home in Moyvane in March 2008. While not commenting on individual cases the Prison Service says all inmates who have served seven years can then engage with the Parole Board but this is the first step in a very long process. The average life sentence in this country is 18-and-a-half years.
