Possession of drugs for personal use increases by 20% in Kerry

The detection of people having drugs for personal use has increased by 20% over the past year in Kerry.

According to figures released at the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting, there were 484 detections of possession of drugs for personal use in the county during the first nine months of this year.

This represents an increase of 20% on the same period in 2018.

There was also an increase in the number of people caught with drugs for sale or supply; this was up 3% to 68 reported offences over the nine-month timeframe.

Members at the recent JPC meeting called on Kerry gardaí to do more to lessen the availability of drugs; in particular, calls were made to find the channels through which people are bringing drugs into Kerry.
