This week Radio Kerry teamed up with The Open Doors Initiative to provide the Speak Up training programme for Open Doors participants. The Open Doors Initiative provides opportunities to some of the marginalised members of our society. They create pathways to work through training, education and employment. Some of the people they work with include: Refugee, asylum seekers and non-native English speakers. Young people under 25 with educational barriers. People with a disability. Speak Up looks to address the imbalance in media by training marginalised groups. Many minority groups don’t have the confidence to speak with the media or in some cases have had a previous negative experience of media coverage. As part of the week participants got hands on experience in putting a two hour radio show together which you will hear this morning. The participants with the help of Connie Broderick and I got to decide on the content, research and produce it themselves and use it as an opportunity to tell stories they wish to highlight or challenge misconceptions
