Thalidomide was a drug that was used in the 1950s and 60s to treat morning sickness. It resulted in some babies being born without limbs or with foreshortened limbs, as well as other impairments and injuries. In Ireland, the public was not notified of the drug’s withdrawal from the international market in 1961. Two years after it was taken off the market, it was still possible to buy Thalidomide in some pharmacies, according to the late, former health minister John O’Connell. Jacqui Browne is a member of the Irish Thalidomide Association and met the Taoiseach yesterday.
