Dr Laura Bambrick is head of social policy and employment affairs at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. ICTU says thousands of people will live ‘significantly below the poverty line’ unless a new retirement benefit is increased by €45 a week. The benefit is aimed at people who retire at 65 and which they can claim until they turn 66, at which point they are then entitled to the state pension.
