Plans for Gardai and Army to staff prisons in the event of strike

Rank and file Gardaí have said they do not want to staff the country’s jails in the event of a strike by prison officers. The Department of Justice has already drawn up contingency plans for the Army and Gardaí to run the jails if Prison Officers take industrial action following their rejection of a pay deal earlier this month. The Garda Representative Association has said its members should not be drawn into any outside dispute. But last night the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, warned them he would not budge on the issue.
