OPW fails to secure Listowel site for Department of Finance

The Office of Public Works has failed in a bid to secure a site from the mart in the centre of Listowel town. A section of The Department of Finance is to move to the North Kerry town under Government plans for decentralisation. Radio Kerry News has learned that the OPW approached the owners of the mart with a view to purchasing a section of the land and developing it. Meanwhile plans for a site in Killarney, for The Department of Tourism are at an advanced stage. It`s understood the property developer who bought the mart site for an estimated five million euro knocked back the offer made by The Office Of Public Works. The OPW were interested in developing the site themselves, but the owner of the mart was not willing to sell the land unless they could construct the building first for the Government department. This was not agreeable to the opw and so the deal fell through. The mart developers are now expected to lodge an application to construct a hotel on the site before the end of the month. Under the decentralisation plan twenty five people from The Department of Finance will move to Listowel. According to the OPW they are now looking at a number of sites in the town. Meanwhile The Department of Finance has confirmed that a number of sites have been short listed as possible property solutions for decentralisation to Killarney. Formal negotiations have taken place with the owners of these sites.
