North Kerry accident blackspot to close to two-way traffic indefinitely

A North Kerry accident blackspot is to close two-way traffic indefinitely.

Kerry County Council is taking the action on the Dale Road, also known at the Rathscannel road, which is the R556 between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff.

As well as being used by locals, tourists travel this route to Ballybunion; it’s built on bog and has subsided, and has been the scene of many accidents.

It’s hoped construction will begin next year on the upgrade a 2.2km section of the Dale Road.

Funding of €300,000 allocated by the Department of Transport earlier this year will cover the ground investigations, land acquisition, and planning permission.

The council says that given the nature of the ground, detailed investigations are necessary for the design and to mitigate for potential risks in construction.

The tender for these specialist geotechnical services was published recently.

These works will require the road to be closed to two-way traffic; it will only be open to motorists travelling southbound from Ballyduff and Ballybunion toward Abbeydorney and Tralee.

Northbound motorists will have to divert via Killahan to the west of the Dale Road.

Kerry County Council says the one-way system will come into operation in two weeks’ time, and will remain in place until construction begins on the road, which is expected to be next year.
