Kerry farmers and landowners have yet to be penalised for illegal gorse fires, the Irish Wildlife Trust has said.
So far this year, there have been 57 illegal fires nationally, and over half of these were in designated areas of conservation including Killarney National Park.
Under EU regulations, landowners are prevented from burning gorse between March and September.
The Department of Agriculture has also warned farmers who breach the regulations could lose some of their Single Farm Payment.
Today’s Irish Examiner reports that by way of a Freedom of Information request, the trust has established no payments were withheld.
