Nine people were prosecuted in Kerry last year for illegal dumping.

Kerry County Council investigated 676 incidents of littering during 2016, with 71 on-the-spot fines issued.

Kerry County Council investigated 676 litter pollution cases during 2016; 364 in the Tralee Municipal District, 141 in Killarney, 97 in Listowel, and 74 in South and West Kerry.

71 on-the-spot fines were issued – 44 in the Tralee MD, 13 in Listowel, eight in South and West Kerry, and six in Killarney.

There were nine prosecutions in the county last year – eight in Tralee and one in South and West Kerry, and costs of €3,020 were awarded to Kerry County Council.

Over 24 tonnes of fly-tipping was collected in 2016 – a reduction of six tonnes on 2015.

Councillors have called for those illegally dumping to be named and shamed.

Director of Services John Breen says they’ll examine if this is possible, and said littering is an ongoing challenge.
