The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is down slightly to 20,110 according to figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
The Chief Medical Officer said the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 is continuing to increase.
Dr Tony Holohan added as we look to 2022, there are many reasons for cautious optimism citing advances in science and public health including the development of new treatments.
