Kerry County Council is in the process of designing a shared cycle and pedestrian facility from Killorglin to the multi-million euro Fexco and RDI

Kerry County Council is in the process of designing a shared cycle and pedestrian facility from Killorglin to the multi-million euro Fexco and RDI Hub outside the town.

The building at the former Liebeg site on the Annadale Road opened in February.

It houses over 125 staff from Fexco’s global R&D, Innovation and IT departments, and is home to the RDI Hub, a new research, development and innovation centre backed by Fexco, the Institute of Technology Tralee, and Kerry County Council.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael Cahill recently called on the council to speed up the realignment of the road, acquire the necessary lands, and provide a footpath and cycle lane adjacent to the busy road for the hundreds of employees using it.

Kerry County Council says the Kerry National Roads Office is currently progressing the design of a shared cycle and pedestrian facility from Killorglin Bridge to the new Fexco facility at Anglont.

The project involves the rehabilitation of the existing pavement and the provision of a new 3 metre wide shared use cycle/pedestrian facility.

The improved road will consist of 3 metre wide lanes, which will have raised grass verges in parts to separate the cycle facility from the road.

Some property will have to be bought for the project, the design of which is currently being refined by consultants appointed by Kerry County Council.

It’s hoped planning will be sought late this year or early next year, subject to approval by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and plans will go on public display this autumn, although this is likely to be an online format due to COVID-19.
