New swimming pool for Ballybunnion under consideration

The Department of Arts Sports and Tourism is considering contract documents for a new swimming pool for Ballybunion. It`s understood up to 90% of grant aid is needed for the project. Following documents submitted by Kerry County Council, technical advisers from the office of public works and the Department of Arts Sports and Tourism examined the information. The project will include a 20m by 10 m swimming pool, a sauna and steam room as well as leisure facilities. Cost of the pool is expected to run up to 5 million euro. This particular scheme has been in the pipelines for the town for some time and has been the subject of some debate for some years. Ballybunion has been finding it difficult to compete with other seaside towns around the county due in no small part to the lack of amenities available to the town. In recent years there has been a considerable drop in the number of American tourists visiting the area, particularly since the September 11 th attacks. It`s envisaged the introduction of this new project should go some way to increasing and maintaining visitor numbers
