New seismic data on an oil field off the Kerry coast is very encouraging.
That’s according to Providence Resources, an Irish-based oil and gas exploration company, which is appraising a number of potential wells 200km off the Kerry coast.
Imaging took place last year of the underlying 700 km2 Dunquin Ridge, which is located in the southern Porcupine Basin.
Providence Resources has confirmed the presence of the previously mapped Dunquin South prospect and, in addition, a large and significant potential fluid escape feature is evident over the previously drilled Dunquin North prospect.
The presence of a major chimney over Dunquin North has been identified as the main reason for prospect failure.
No such feature is evident over the Dunquin South prospect.
Dr John O’Sullivan, Technical Director of Providence, says new 3D seismic data greatly enhances the company’s understanding of the exploration potential of this block.
In addition, data suggests a sedimentary origin for Dunquin Ridge, which itself may provide a significant exploration target for a future Dunquin South well.
