Nearly a quarter of people who report assaults in Kerry subsequently withdraw their claim.

Figures revealed at the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting show that there were over 540 assaults committed in Kerry in 2018, up from 463 in 2017.

Members of the JPC were also shown a five-year analysis, which shows the number of assaults increased every year since 2014.

Superintendent of the Tralee Garda Division Dan Keane says time and resources go into investigating assaults, and he’s urged people to follow through with their complaints.

He says up to 25% of people withdraw their claims.
