Nearly four in ten births in the county happen outside of marriage

Nearly four in ten births in the county happen outside of marriage.

According to the Central Statistics Office, there were over 1,600 (1,626) births in the county in 2017, 38% of which were to non-married mothers.

In 2017, over 620 (622) births occurred outside of marriage in the county, representing 38% of total births.


The percentage of births outside marriage is increasing, up from 36% in 2016 and 34% in 2015.

In 2007, the rate stood at 28%, while in 1997 19% of births happened outside of marriage.

Elsewhere, the average age of first-time mothers has increased to 31, up from 29 in 2007 and nearly 28 years in 1997.
