Timo Werner was fouled for a first half penalty which Jorginho converted.

Leandro Trossard levelled for Brighton in the second period, before James crashed in an effort from 25 yards.

The win was secured when Kurt Zouma’s effort was deflected in by Adam Webster.

Stage 16 takes in five categorised climbs in the 164 kilometres from La Tour du Pin to Villard de Lans.

Bennett’s main point of concern will be the intermediate sprint at Saint Joseph de Riviere.

The Carrick-on-Suir sprinter holds a 45-point lead over Peter Sagan.

GOLF

Sam Horsfield became the latest player to pull out of this week’s US Open last night.

The Englishman tested positive for COVID-19 upon his arrival at Winged Foot.

Horsfield’s place in the field goes to Rory Sabbatini.

Scottie Scheffler had already confirmed his withdrawal, and is replaced by Branden Grace.
