Minister says CIT won’t have to take on ITT debts

The Education Minister has reassured Cork Institute of Technology that it won’t have to take on debts of IT Tralee.

The Irish Times reports that Joe McHugh wrote to the heads of both colleges which are to merge to form the Munster Technological University.

The Government recently provided €5million to IT Tralee in emergency funding; the letter states that the Government is committed to higher education in Kerry.

Minister McHugh said there is no question that the move would be expected to give rise to a potential financial burden that would undermine the financial stability and sustainability of the MTU.
