McMahon Into The 200m Semi Final In Berlin

Swim IrelandIreland’s Sycerika McMahon has qualified for the semi-final of the 200m Individual Medley (IM) at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin, Germany. Swimming in the last heat McMahon started well turning fourth after the Butterfly leg in 29.26, after the Backstroke leg she had fallen back to 7th but a strong 50m of Breaststroke put her right back in contention and carried her through to 4th in the heat and 13th overall in 2:15.46. Commenting afterwards “I’m happy to get through to the semi-finals but I’m not really happy with the time I swam. I’ve gone faster than this and I’ll go back and look at the race video to see where I went wrong and what I can improve on for tonight’s race” Hungarian Katinka Hosszu was the fastest qualifier from the heats in the 200m Individual Medley in 2:11.06. Hosszu, who is the European Record holder in the event has already won 400m IM Gold this week. The semi-final will take place at 5.35pm. In this morning’s other races there was disappointment for Brendan Hyland who did not make it out of the 200m Butterfly heats. Hyland’s time of 2:00.34 was off his Irish record of 1:58.68, the 19 year old would have needed to swim a new Irish record to make the semi-final with the last spot allocated to Slovakias Robert Zbogar in 1:58.55. In the 200m Breaststroke Dan Sweeney was disqualified for an infringement after the first turn while Nicholas Quinn was unlucky not to make it back for the semi-final missing out by just .6 of a second touching in 2:14.82.
