Man remanded in custody charged with assaulting three men with a hammer in Tralee

A man has been remanded in custody for a week charged with assaulting three men with a hammer in Tralee.

It’s alleged 36-year-old Michael Costello of Apartment 4, 5 Wellington Terrace, Cork City carried out the assaults causing harm last Friday, October 11th at service stations on Quill Street and John Joe Sheehy Road, Tralee.

At today’s sitting of Tralee District Court, solicitor Padraig O’Connell sought a forensic psychiatric report on his client’s fitness to plea, as he feels the case can’t progress until the report is brought to court; he first asked for this report at a special court sitting last weekend.

Mr O’Connell said Michael Costello was brought to the psychiatric unit of Cork University Hospital from Cork Prison last weekend and was assessed immediately; he’s since been receiving treatment within the prison.

He added his client, a university student, had never been in contact with gardaí previously, and noted he won’t be applying for bail.

Judge David Waters remanded Michael Costello in custody for a week for DPP direction and for a medical report to be prepared for the State that addresses his fitness to plea.

He’ll reappear before Tralee District Court next Wednesday.
