Man given suspended sentence after assaulting ambulance worker

A man has been given a suspended sentence after assaulting a member of the ambulance service.

David Costello of 8 Dirha Cottages, Listowel appeared before Listowel District Court recently charged with a section 2 assault.

David Costello was charged with assaulting a member of the ambulance service on the 6th of October 2017 at his home in Dirha Cottages, Listowel.

Mr Costello said he didn’t recognise the ambulance personnel, who was providing assistance to his brother at the time, as the crew member wasn’t in uniform.

The accused said he believed the victim was a trespasser.

A struggle ensued and Gardaí were called to the house.

The victim suffered bruising and swelling and was treated at University Hospital Kerry following the assault.

Appearing for the accused, Padraig O’Connell said Mr Costello became involved when he shouldn’t and regrets what happened.

Padraig O’Connell also referenced extreme medical issues faced by his client including intellectual difficulties.

Judge David Waters said his gut reaction was a custodial sentence, however, he handed out a 5-month sentence and suspended it for two years.
