Man who allegedly assaulted men with a hammer in Tralee remanded in custody

A man who allegedly assaulted three men with a hammer in Tralee has been remanded in custody.

36-year-old Michael Costello of Cork City is charged with three counts of assault causing harm; it’s alleged he assaulted three men with a hammer in Tralee on Friday night.

Killarney District Court heard that Mr Costello was arrested and taken to Cork prison, before later being transferred to Cork University Hospital.

The court heard that Mr Costello was unable to attend today’s sitting due to medical reasons.

Solicitor Padraig O’Connell, who appeared on behalf of Mr Costello, asked for the forensic psychiatry report to be sought, stating it would be needed for a fitness to plea.

The state made an application to Judge David Waters to remand Mr Costello in custody; he is due to reappear before Tralee District Court on Wednesday.
