SOCCER

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he tried to sign Luis Suarez when he was still in charge at Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

The Uruguyan sharp-shooter opted for Atletico Madrid when he left Barcelona - and has scored 16 goals in 24 appearances this season.

The Blues play the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico in the neutral city of Bucharest this evening.

Elsewhere in the competition tonight, champions Bayern Munich are away to Lazio.

The Germans have lost and drawn in their last two league matches since being crowned world club champions earlier this month.

In the Premier League this evening, Leeds United welcome Southampton to Elland Road for a 6pm kick off.

There are six matches in the Championship, with leaders Norwich City away to Birmingham City.

Back home and St Patrick's Athletic have signed West Ham United midfielder Alfie Lewis ahead of the 2021 SSE Airtricity Premier Division season.

The 21-year-old midfielder has made nearly 60 Premier League Two appearances for the Hammers but has yet to make a first-team debut.

His loan deal with the Inchicore club is until the end of June.

RUGBY

The Ireland squad are back training today ahead of Saturday's Six Nations match with Italy in Rome.

All of the Irish players remain free of COVID 19 after four rounds of Covid-19 P-C-R testing.

There have been no further positive coronavirus results from the latest round of testing in the France squad.

Ten players have already contracted the virus - putting this weekend's Six Nations match against Scotland in doubt.

A decision on whether the game will go ahead will be made tomorrow.

After his win at the Welsh Open, Antrim's Jordan Brown is back in action today.

Brown has just started his first round match at the Players Championship in Milton Keynes against four-time world champions John Higgins.

HORSE RACING

Horse Racing Ireland has announced that last Thursday's meeting at Clonmel which was cancelled due to waterlogging will now take place on Tuesday the 9th of March.

This meeting will be an all-hurdle/bumper card commencing at 2.25pm.
