Listowel Town Council modifie refuse collection charges

Following a lengthily debate members of Listowel Town Council modified charges on the new refuse collection service at last nights annual budget meeting. Concerns were expressed about the future viability of the service in the town. Meanwhile an increase of 3.8% was adopted by the chamber, a slightly lower figure than the 4.5% increase the Manager was looking for.Town Manager Michael McMahon informed members that other counties where the local authority was no longer in the bin collection service the cost of refuse collection has increased significantly. He said members have to understand the removal of refuse costs the council money and they have to levy a charge on customers.Councillor Denis Stack proposed the flat rate of 200 euro be reduced to 150 and the lift charge increased to eight euro from six in order to make the system more attractive to customers, whilst not losing any revenue. This was adopted by the council by six votes to three. Meanwhile an increase of 3.8% was adopted for commercial rates. This was achieved by cutting funding to charitable organisations, three pay parking machines instead of four and an increase in the processing of planning applications.
