Listowel pharmacy receives highest medicine payments in Kerry

A pharmacy in Listowel received the highest payment in Kerry from the Health Service Executive last year for medicines provided under a range of public health schemes. John F Maguire`s received over 470,000 under general medical services payments. Pharmacists are paid by the state for these services which come under a range of schemes, including the medical card scheme and the drugs payment scheme.Doctors, dentists and optometrists in Kerry are also paid under by the General Medicines Board. Next on the pharmacy list in the county is Sheahans in Killarney which received over 345,000 euro. Kennellys in Castleisland received 288,000 and Brosnans in Kenmare picked up 283,000. Nationally there s been a sharp increase in the level of payments which according to the Health Service Executive reflects an increasing and ageing population. Meanwhile 325 doctors around the country were paid over 240,000 euro last year, compared with 260 in 2003, 53 dentists received over 120,000 euro.
