Listowel Gaelscoil and Kerry Education service discuss planners decision

Representatives from Listowel Gaelscoil and the Kerry Education Service are discussing the implications of a decision not to allow a new entrance into the community college. The community college had agreed to allow The Gaelscoil use a portion of land at the back of the school. But an application to create a new entrance through a residential area has been rejected by planners. Another application to construct a new prefab and to move the existing temporary classrooms has been granted by the town council. The current Gaelscoil is no longer suitable for the schools needs and the search for new premises has been ongoing for a number of years. Today`s decision means the Gaelscoil will have the use of prefabs and buildings at the back of the community college but will have to use the front entrance, which may not suit them. Planners rejected the proposal for the new entrance on the basis that it would lead to an increase in traffic in a residential area. Residents were opposed to the proposal and a petition was submitted as well as a number of individual objections. The Gaelscoil has the option of appealing to An Bord Pleanala but with just over a month to go before school restarts time could be running out for the school.
