Lidl opens in Listowel tomorrow

Following much controversy, Lidl is to open in Listowel tomorrow. The German retailer has been the subject of much debate in The Town Council chambers. The controversial plan for the new discount retail outlet had emerged as a major issue in the run up to the local elections back in June. Concerns were expressed about the threat to other traders should the discount store get the go ahead. Fine Gael members boycotted a meeting with representatives of Lidl at the time for fear it would undermine the voting process.A material contravention was needed at the time to alter the zoning of the land to commercial development . However a unanimous vote in favour of letting the retailer was eventually taken by councillors. Construction began back in June of this year and was built three weeks ahead of schedule. It`s expected the store will employ around twenty five people. Lidl already have stores in Tralee, Killarney and Castleisland.
