A leading obstetrician is adding his voice to calls for another referendum on abortion in Ireland, after a woman was denied a termination under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act. It’s emerged today that the young woman at the centre of the case attempted to take her own life when she was 16 weeks pregnant. In an interview with the Irish Times, the woman said she was a victim of rape before she came to Ireland earlier this year. She also said that she expressed her desire to die rather than bear her rapist’s child, after finding out she was eight weeks and four days pregnant during a medical check on her arrival to Ireland.
