Law doesn’t require qualified driver accompanying L-driver to be under alcohol limit

The Road Safety Authority has confirmed that the law doesn’t require a qualified driver, accompanying a learner driving a car, to be below the alcohol limit.

This means a qualified driver in a car driven by a learner could be drunk as the law is silent on the matter.

Under legislation introduced by Minister Shane Ross, drivers on a provisional driving licence must be accompanied by a qualified driver.

Chair of the Kerry Law Society, John Galvin believes it would be farcical to try to close the legal loophole.
