KTC to look for set up of deer commission

Killarney Town Council is to write to the Minister for Environment and local government to set up a deer commission. This comes after Dick Roche signed an open season order on the Red Deer herd in Killarney National Park. The Minister signed the order after farmers reported an increase of incursions onto their land. Prior to this they were not allowed to shoot the animals in question. In the order, the Antlered Red Stag are exempt and not allowed to be shot to discourage the practice of trophy hunting by gun clubs. Last year there were 24 traffic accidents involving deer in Kerry, the proposed deer commission would keep track of the number of accidents in the future. The Council agreed an established commission which would produce up to date information on anything deer related is the best way forward.
