Killarney Travellers to stage protest this week

Travellers in Killarney are to stage a series of protests at pubs in the town this week. Travellers claim the protests are being organised to highlight discrimination against them. Previous plans for a protest ahead of St Patrick `s Day were put on hold for 10 days pending talks with vintners. In a letter signed by Travellers, and Cllrs Donal Grady and Michael Courtney a commitment was given to set up a meeting with all sides including at least three publicans representatives. However Travellers say the Vintners appear to have no intention of holding face to face talks. The Cllrs met publicans last week, following that meeting the Travellers called on publicans to honour their commitment to direct talks. A 48 hour ultimatum was delivered last Thursday but there has been no contact so far. Travellers Spokesperson Teresa O Brien say they will take action this week. They are to meet tonight to decide the time and location of their protests.
