Killarney MD councillors propose to rezone land in Rathmore for industrial use

Killarney MD councillors have proposed to rezone land in Rathmore for industrial use.

Members discussed the draft Local Area Plan for 2018-2024, which included the proposed rezoning of land in the area, excluding lands within the Killarney town boundary.

A submission to Kerry County Council from Jeremiah Buckley requested the previous zoning of light industrial/warehouse/distribution be reinstated.

Kerry County Council initially refused the request as it’s an objective to ensure all new development is located within a certain boundary in order to promote a compact urban form.

They claimed the lands’ location adjacent to the N72 road would make access an issue, and they recommended rezoning for agricultural use.

Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Kelleher supported the initial submission, saying Rathmore could benefit from any industries which may be attracted to the area.

He pointed to existing industries which have created employment in the greater Rathmore area.

His proposal was supported by fellow councillors, and the proposed change will now go through a 4-week period of public consultation.
